Kalamazoo and Battle Creek are neighboring cities in the middle of Michigan. They are found along the Interstate-94, equal distances between Chicago and Detroit. In this article we’ll discuss all the best things to do in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.

Michigan is a beautiful state with an abundance of options for nature enthusiasts. For the rest of us in the Kalamazoo area, there are museums.

Full Disclosure: I was assigned to work at the Battle Creek VA Hospital in February and March of 2026. A lot of these travel articles we’ve written are the result of work assignments in random places, many of which have landed us in the mid-west the past two years. Winter in Michigan isn’t something we’d ordinarily choose, but ever the optimists we treat each location as if it were the Amalfi Coast.

So we’re going to tell it to you straight — that’s our thing here at hofftoseetheworld.com. We’ve done the hours of research, we’ve hit up the locals for recommendations, and we’ve visited each and every one of these places ourselves.

My temporary co-workers found it funny I’d landed in Battle Creek during wintertime. Most of them said we should head upstate to Macinac Island, Traverse City, or Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, rather than spend our time around here.

And honestly, I believe we did more in their neck of the woods in two months then any of them had done in their whole lives. You’d be surprised how often this happens.

If you needed one good reason to come to this part of the country, it should be to visit the Gilmore Car Museum. Not only is this one of the best things to do in Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, or the state of Michigan — It’s one of the best things to do in the entire United States.

Believe it or not, the farm fields of Michigan are home to the largest car museum in North America, with over 400 autos spread across a spectacular 90 acre facility. I’ve toured a handful of great USA car museums including the Henry Ford, but never in all my years has machinery elicited a profound emotional response like it did here.

These are the rarest beauties and most perfect specimens you’ll see, perhaps anywhere on earth. We think the Gilmore Car Museum is a chef’s kiss of must-see Americana.

2. Air Zoo

The other standout attraction in this region is the internationally acclaimed Smithsonian-affiliated Kalamazoo Air Zoo. Here you will find more than 100 aircraft and spacecraft, interactive exhibits, amusement rides for the kids, full motion flight simulators, and a theater showing a handful of space and flight related movies.

To give locals their due, this incredible museum lives up to its reputation, as the aircrafts they’ve collected will engross children and old-timers alike. One of the featured planes is a Lockheed SR-71B Blackbird, a historic, one-of-a-kind specimen known for being the fastest plane ever made. Others include a decorated F-117 Nighthawk, a Curtiss XP-55 Ascender, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat from movie Top Gun, and the Douglas C-47 Skytrain which led the D-Day invasion formation.

In addition to planes and flight exhibits for the kids, there is an interesting exhibits on aliens and another on missions to Mars.

Not only will you find soft sand and blue water in a mid-western state, you’ll also enjoy a superlative seaside town and charming ambiance for days. Once upon a time, Battle Creek was home to a renowned sanitarium (the wellness kind, not psychiatric state hospital kind), that was run by J.H. Kellogg. Folks came from all over the world to improve their health in Battle Creek.

This might not appeal to every traveler because the Advetist Historic Village is a rustic, one-room museum with 7th Day Adventist members for tour guides. Furthermore, the topic of J.H. Kellogg, the inimitable man responsible for modern day breakfast cereal, borders on bizarre. The place is fascinating nonetheless. Book at Tour on the website.

6. Kalamazoo Valley Museum

We were surprised to find such a high quality museum in a town of this size. For openers, the Kalamazoo Valley Museum is three beautifully designed floors of artifacts and exhibits, so you get your money’s worth.

On the first floor was a feature on black cowboys. The second floor is the primary exhibit which highlights the history and relevance of Kalamazoo and the surrounding Michigan area. It is easy to peruse and visually stimulating, and tells a story not dissimilar to many other mid-sized towns. And on the third floor was a special exhibit on guitars, which was awesome.
