15 New Zealand Surprises

New Zealand is full of surprises. You can safely assume that your adventure will be endlessly visceral no matter how many photos and itineraries you’ve consumed on the internet.
I think my favorite facet of travel is the anticipation and delivery of surprise. After all the research is performed and the expectations are set, and the beauty has been imagined and anticipated so long that it’s like I’ve already been there, I know that there will still be unexpected moments that will arrive as if by magic.
We poured over our New Zealand itinerary for 15 months. True story. I reserved a motorhome on October 1st, 2023 for a 39-day vacation that began on March 1st, 2025. This is a substantial amount of time to dig into every possible option.

Most of the plans went off as expected. On occasion the actual experience was equal to the imagined experience that occurred during research. And sadly, a few times the expectations exceeded the results, which resulted in a few disappointments.
Not to worry, though, because time after time we were thrilled to experience something substantially better than what we had planned! That is what I want to highlight in this article. These are the New Zealand surprises that hit us the hardest (in no particular order). We hope you enjoy!
1. Hokitika

Everything within the general vicinity of Hokitika — the beach, town, foothills, and famous gorge — makes this one of the most incredible places to visit in New Zealand. Here the mountains come awfully close to the tropical shore, with acres of stunning farmland between.
The highlights are the driftwood covered beach, the above mentioned Hokitika Gorge, and the charming shops in town. We weren’t prepared for this much whimsy and beauty on our brief stopover here, which is why we consider this one of the biggest surprises in New Zealand.
2. Kaiteriteri

Kaiteriteri is the best beach town on the South Island that no one is talking about. Not only is this tiny, recreation-oriented village the doorstep to Abel Tasman National Park, but it has a few things up it’s sleeve on it’s own.
Start with some of the best sand and water in all of New Zealand and a tidal lake that creates a massive kiddie-pool for family delights. Then add in some alcoves to explore, two additional beaches, some delicious ice cream, and about 500 camping sites, and you have one of the great local holiday spots in all of Oceana. We had no idea.

3. Mount Maunganui

This was our other favorite beach in New Zealand, the locals hotspot called the Mount. Located on the North Island along the Bay of Plenty, Mount Maunganui is a 3.5 mile beach that stretches from the base of a volcano — yes, volcano — as far as the eye can see.
Whether you’re here to surf some of the best waves in New Zealand, shop and dine in town, or hike on and around the 760′ rhyolitic lava dome with an assortment of friendly and active locals, you are going to have a great time. Mount Maunganui is definitely one of the biggest surprises in New Zealand.
4. Skyline Luge — New Zealand Surprises

When I think of the physical activities that fill me with childlike joy — inner tubing, paintball, snow skiing — luging down the mountainside belongs on that very short list. This is about as much fun as a human can have.
Any visit to Queenstown would be incomplete without a trip up the gondola, so when you buy your ticket, be sure to pick a package that includes the mountainside luge. In fact, buy twice as many luge runs as you think you’ll need. No matter how many you buy, you’ll want at least three more (6 is probably enough). Trust us. Spend the extra cash.

5. Hot Water Beach

Few excursions were as fun for our family as the half-day we spent at Hot Water Beach. In a photo it looks like chaos … because it is pure chaos.
The gyist is, a scalding hot spring runs right under the beach, so if you dig a little pit you can sit in a dirty hot tub. However, the water temperatures vary a great deal depending on where you dig, which makes it unpredictable — and hilarious. Once you’ve established a pool fit for goldilocks you can sit back and watch the mayhem afoot. It’s first-rate theater.
6. Castle Hill Rocks

If you enjoy geographic anomalies the Castle Hill Rocks are for you. This is an exquisite landscape in the mountains of Arthur’s Pass National Park with a 1 mile RT trail.
We knew nothing about the Castle Hill Rocks whatsoever. A tour bus pulled into a parking lot during an especially scenic part of the drive and we decided to see follow it. So glad we did! It led to a spectacular walkabout and one of our most pleasant New Zealand surprises.

7. Downtown Queenstown

Everyone has nice things to say about Queenstown and no trip to New Zealand would be complete without a stopover. We were simply unprepared for how beautiful this lakeside town would be.
Four days is a good amount of time to stay here – 3 days to check out the town and have an excursion, then an additional day for the drive to Glenorchy.
8. Hooker Valley Track

Some say this is their favorite place in all of New Zealand, and other’s consider it one of the best things to do in the country. Well, count us in! Of all the incredible places we visited over our 39 day adventure, Mt. Cook National Park was the most beautiful of all.
And of all the things we saw and did in the park, the Hooker Valley Track was the most rewarding. Along the 7 mile out-and-back trail you will encounter three swinging bridges, two lakes, many icebergs, the tallest mountain in New Zealand, and countless stunning vistas.
9. Glenorchy — New Zealand Surprises

When you come to Queenstown be sure to set some time aside to make the drive to Glenorchy! Everyone on the internet told us to do it, but the pictures didn’t do it justice. This allowed us to have one our biggest New Zealand surprises.
The town of Glenorchy is fine, but be sure to wind your way to the lakeside pier setting, which is a few blocks from the shops. And if you’re a LOTR nerd like us, you can drive an extra 20 minutes to the filming location of Isengard, at the southern end of the Misty Mountains. In fact, the amount of mountains you’ll see in and around Glenorchy is shocking!
10. Cape Farewell

Wharariki Beach gets plenty of hyperbole, but far less heralded is the Cape Farewell Track that begins right there on the sand. Within minutes of writing your name by the ocean with little hearts dotting your I’s, you’ll find yourself atop rolling green hills with the sheep. What a world!
And if you ask us, it’s better up there with the sheep! The landscape is surreal and the views are some of the most wild you’ll ever experience. It might be a pain in the butt to drive all the way out to this corner of the island, but if you make the trip, don’t skip the Cape Farewell Track.

11. Te Anau

The famous Milford Sound is often experienced as a daytrip from Queenstown, which is a mistake. It is far better to begin and end your day in Te Anau, which is found halfway between Queenstown and the sound, thus cutting the drive time in half.
And to add to your blessings, Te Anau has plenty going on all by itself, with a beautiful mountain-clad setting along the lake and a town worth exploring for a couple of hours. Chalk this up as another one of our New Zealand surprises.
12. Hobbiton — New Zealand Surprises

Everyone comes here expecting it to be amazing, so imagine how great it will be when it blows your wildest expectations to smithereens.
Our Strongest Recommendation: Book the 2nd Breakfast Tour. It costs $70 NZD more than the basic tour, but it’s the first tour of the day — which is highly desirable — and the breakfast is delicious!
13. Hamilton Temple

The Hamilton New Zealand Temple was dedicated on April 20, 1958, by President David O. McKay. It was the first LDS temple built in the Southern Hemisphere.
We did not know what to expect, and found it to be one of our best New Zealand surprises! The grounds were beautiful and we met friendly members outside the temple who chatted with us like friends. It was absolutely wonderful!
14. Holiday Parks

It would be shameful to write about all the surprises waiting in New Zealand if we failed to mention how amazing are their Holiday Parks. From Queenstown to Auckland we enjoyed a string of positive experiences at the campgrounds along the way.
The highlights of these high-quality RV resorts are found in their communal living spaces. There was little need to cook in our cramped Class-B RV kitchen when we could walk across the way and access a half-dozen ranges and dish wash stations. The bathrooms were large and clean. There were game rooms and big-screen TV’s. The country is totally set-up for RV travelers, and that was a pleasant New Zealand surprise.
15. Exchange Rate — New Zealand Surprises

Who doesn’t love it when your money stretches a bit further than usual? Not I, said the Americans. As of today, 4/8/26, one USD is equal to 1.72 NZD, which is even better than when we visited last year.
So when you see a 2 lb. block of cheese for $18 and think, who the hell can afford to buy cheese in this country; you’ll then think, oh yeah, that’s only $10.50 USD … And that’s still a lot! … But it’s less. It’s substantially less.
Everything is expensive in New Zealand, but it’s less expensive when you’re spending US dollars. We can be thankful (and surprised) about that.
An Honest Conclusion for New Zealand Surprises

The adventure mecca of New Zealand is perhaps the surprise capital of the world. You can safely expect to experience a mind-blowing number of beautiful things on your vacation.
If you’re anything like us, you’ll find that between the jaw-dropping views and once-in-a-lifetime excursions you’ll have a hundred little moments that you didn’t expect. They’ll happen all over New Zealand — there’s no way to anticipate the incredible joy you’ll feel in this amazing country.
We hope you have endless New Zealand surprises that live in your memories forever. After all, aren’t the things that surprise us the things we remember most favorably of all? We certainly think so.
