1. Crow’s Nest

The Crow’s Nest Restaurant is a standout breakfast/brunch diner with an eclectic atmosphere and superlative food. It sits above a coffee shop with a commanding view over the neighborhood. Its worth waiting for a window seat. The menu is packed with creative dishes. We strongly recommend the Sailor’s Delight — it was the single best thing we tasted in Kalamazoo.

2. Blue Dolphin

Blue Dolphin is a beloved, no-frills Greek restaurant with a knock-your-socks-off gyro for under $10. The restaurant is well-known for its friendly, welcoming staff, generous portions, and affordable prices, making it a go-to for both locals and visitors looking for a satisfying meal. The casual Greek decor adds to the experience — you might just want to break a plate, but don’t.

3. Martell’s

Martell’s is a well-established fine-dining restaurant with delicious food and a lakeside view. Despite the fireplace comfort and white-linen beauty of the experience, the prices are very reasonable! If you’re looking for a special night out that won’t break the bank, Martell’s is your best bet. Call ahead and reserve a table by the windows.

4. One Well Brewing

This “brewery” is one of the best times in Kalamazoo, so if you’re looking for a date night or family-friendly venue, One Well Brewing is an excellent option. The menu is creative and has a lot of options; same goes for the beer. Perhaps best of all is One Well has roughly 20 classic arcade games, pool tables, and foosball, as well as a miniature bowling alley and 50 pinball machines.

5. Louie’s Trophy House

Louie’s is a bar that serves food, but this is some of the best bar food you’ll find for a hundred miles. The vibe is Cheers with dead animals on the walls. And the menu is seductive as hell with some interesting flavors you won’t find elsewhere. The reuben sandwich was probably the best we’ve ever had. It doesn’t get much more classic than Louie’s Trophy House.

6. Studio Grill

If hamburgers are your thing, this is arguably the best burger in Kalamazoo. Studio Grill has an artschool vibe with young servers and humble furnishings. And the burgers are as creative as the paintings on the walls. We recommend the brunch burger and whatever else you wanna try. French fries are good, too.

7. Bell’s Eccentric Cafe

We are told the current Bell’s isn’t quite what it used to be, and that’s fine. We’re basically none the wiser. What we do know is this is an active joint with life music, a youthful crowd, high ceilings, and dynamite hamburgers. If you like burgers, we would absolutely recommend a Noli with fries. It’s in the running for best burger in Kalamazoo.

8. Bilbo’s

If you run a search for the best pizza in Kalamazoo you will get a mishmash consensus of about ten different joints. The two we heard the most were Bilbo’s and Erbelli’s, so we ate at both places.

Bilbo’s makes a picturesque pie with a great crust. It is not cheap, but it’s pretty darn good. They also have a dill sauce you can order separately to indulge with breadsticks, which is recommended.

Despite its solid reputation, Erbelli’s was just ok. We can’t sincerely recommend it.

9. Cairo’s Kitchen

Cairo’s shawarma wrap and fries with garlic sauce was incredible. The restaurant itself is ordinary, found on the street level of the downtown Exchange Lofts condo tower. So the dining experience involves little more than the food itself, unlike most of the other restaurants on this list. Still, those flavors are divine.

10. Shawarma King

If you’re hungry and you love middle eastern cuisine, the Shawarma King is calling your name in Kalamazoo. The all-you-can-eat buffet — which we recommend — costs $17 and it is worth every penny.

Whatever you like they have it: Baba ghanoush, falafel, fried pita w/ garlic sauce, spicy garlic potato, chicken and beef shawarma, tawook, kafta, charbroiled chicken, biryani rice, and an abundance of vegetable dishes.

An Honest Review for Restaurants in Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo is a great place to score a well-priced meal. We did our best to gather all the reviews, both word of mouth and online, then consolidate and organize them so we could sample the very best of what Kalamazoo offers.

The only restaurants we visited twice were the Blue Dolphin and One Well Brewing. The gyro at Blue Dolphin is the best we’ve ever had. Martell’s would have earned a repeat visit later in spring once the trees around the lake donned their leaves. And Crow’s Nest would be a regular haunt if we lived in Kalamazoo.

The ambiance at Louie’s isn’t our style, but the food was on point. Studio Grill would be a semi-frequent stop because their burgers are interesting and fun. And I’m sure we would stop in at Bell’s for a Noli burger every time the hankering for goat cheese came around.
